SEED school was initially established in some disused and incomplete structure comprising a mixture of building materials. With expanding numbers as the children were growing up, the original “accommodation” as it was, was not appropriate any longer and there was an obvious need for a permanent building. With the amazing help from our supporters in Aberdeen the money was raised and the group laid the foundations in February 2011. In October 2011 the first block was completed and opened and the first classes could move in.

The foundations for the second block were laid and walls completed up to the level above the windows. Sadly the workmanship of the brickwork was very poor and since 2015 there have been wrangles by our locals colleagues with the original builder to take them down and rebuild same. However as there are no formal contracts this has been hard to progress although some settlement is now being put in place. We hope to be able to proceed with this very soon.

The staff and children of Newton Farm School in Harrow have adopted SEED School and through various fundraising events have raised enough money to provide books, new desks and chairs for the upper classes of SEED School. The pupils at SEED School were overjoyed with the arrival of their new furniture, so much so that they did not want to go home for the Christmas holidays!

Newton Farm has also provided greatly for the community by giving families goats, chickens and hen houses, which provide food and income for the family. The families who have received these gifts are doing well and are very grateful for the gift. This very encouraging relationship with Newton Farm has stretched over several years and also helped Newton Farm to gain high recognition for this type of support by UNICEF

SEED School has now had three Forms graduate with very good marks and seen those students also establish themselves with credit in High Schools

A vital resource that is hard to come by, especially of good quality. In November 2012 we went to the well where the people of Cheptiret-Kapkoi (Seiyo) gather their water. We were taken to a small pond hidden underneath a tree, full of leaves and mud, with frogs happily swimming in it. Add this to the fact that the vast majority of people do not have latrines and have to use the fields which lead to this pond as a mass public toilet and you can see the dire need for access to clean water. (Along with the fact we have all had very bad experiences with water-borne diseases on or just after our travels!)

Abigail Ministries has been able to overcome this problem of lack of quality water having been blessed in two ways, both with the funds to drill and complete a borehole and through a friend who was the project manager for the Aquatics Centre at the London Olympics. Our friend negotiated with his managers that the tanks used for the Aquatics Centre could be donated to Abigail Ministries for use in Kenya. The Company who built them very kindly funded the transfer of the tanks to Kenya on a journey over many by road, sea and rail. That was a very great contribution. There had been many a challenge on clearance of paperwork throughout that transfer!

The main tank for SEED School was completed in 2014 by an excellent team from London who rebuilt the tank over a two week period. This tank can hold 120,000 litres of water. Since that time taps have been installed throughout the SEED School complex also ones for public use by the roadside and, being installed in 2017, a gravity feed to serve Abigail Health Care Centre. The remaining tank components are to be used by another project working with children some 12km away. The taps installed for the Public supply to many local families over a 3km radius.

We are so thankful to God for this provision of clean water and His amazing intervention to ensure the tanks arrived on time despite many hurdles. Then again that after MUCH pressure and tension, the electrical supply was connected to the bore hole pump, the final day of tank construction!

For some of those young people who have excelled at High School there may be the opportunity to progress further and attend University. This is a luxury that few of the people we have links with in Kenya would ever be able to even dream of and we are proud to say that 5 of our sponsored young people have been able to fulfill this dream.

Japheth is soon to be starting his second year in Agricultural Extension Education, Aristariko is doing a degree in Business Studies, Peter is studying African Anthropology and Andrew is taking Law. Anne will begin her course in April, studying Medicine.

It is such a joy to see these young people prospering in a way that, for them, seemed impossible and we hope to be able to give others this opportunity in the future.

The piece of land we purchased was named – Shena’s Village, named by the villagers after one of the founder members of Abigail Ministries (who most people know).

The dedication service for the land was held on 20th February 2012 whilst three of the Trustees were in Kenya. It was a wonderful time. The land had been sub-divided into twelve plots and a section in the middle was kept as a communal area. The twelve beneficiaries arrived at the service not knowing what they were about to receive. They all now had the gift of a plot of land on which we have built them a permanent home.

We have been delighted to learn that four of the beneficiaries have become Christians as a result of the gift God has given through Abigail Ministries – all glory to Him!

Since the creation of Shena’s village we have built individual houses in a number of locations to meet the needs of these people who had no place to call their home and were often liable for huge rent rises, eviction or property collapse in their homes that were often “created” by squatting on public land – they call it “parking”!

Update 17th January 2013…

The Bakery was opened in May 2011 and has been a great success. The ladies have been working very hard and the transformation in their lives has been magnificent. They are happier and more fulfilled.

There were some problems with the firewood oven but an extension was built to accommodate an electric oven and other electric equipment, in order for the ladies to be even more productive with the more reliable equipment. Unfortunately, the installation has been delayed as there is a hold up with the delivery of electricity.

These things can take some time to overcome in Kenya but we wait and pray patiently, as do the ladies, for this hurdle to be removed to allow them to branch out even further.
